Declered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2012, Elvas offers a vast military legacy proved by the castle, the first building in Portugal classified as a national monument. The XVIIth century walls, the Military Museum, the Fort of Gra\u00e7a, the Fort of Santa Luzia and its three small forts justify the city\u2019s nickname, \u201cQueen of the Border\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><b>Religious town<\/b> \u2013 A walk in the historical centre gives you the chance to see its rich religious patrimony, with important evidence of Christian, Jewish and Islamic cultures. <\/p>\n<p><b>The Amoreira Aqueduct<\/b> \u2013 A monument that spans seven kilometres till it reaches the city gates. The works started in 1530 in order to bring water up to Elvas. This engineering work would only be finished a century later. This Islamic village was passed to the Portuguese crown by the middle of the XIIIth century. Since it was on the front defensive line, the village was continuously attacked by the Castilian troops until stability in the XXth century. This Alentejo village shows its ancient and important heritage, with monuments like the main church built in 1273, the village Pillory from the XVIth century, the church of S\u00e3o Sebasti\u00e3o and the church of Nossa Senhora do Pa\u00e7o, both from the XVI-XVIIth centuries and the Santo Calv\u00e1rio or Chapel of Nazar\u00e9 from the XVIIIth century.<\/p>\n<p><b>Anta da Coutada de Barbacena<\/b> \u2013 A national monument from the Neo-chalcolithic or Copper Age. One of the 13 dolmens classified by the Patrimony and Culture Department which is included in Elvas Archaeological Dolmen Route.<\/p>\n<p><b>Barbacena Castle<\/b> \u2013 It\u2019s a fortification included in the rich network of military architectural monuments of this region. Nowadays is a private property. The castle is thought to be built during the reign of king Afonso II (1248-1279) on a pre-Roman fortification. An event with no settled date, it takes place whenever the inhabitants of Campo Maior decide to dedicate thousands of hours to create roses, tulips and many other colour paper flowers to cover all of Campo Maior streets. There\u2019s a darker place, the Capela dos Ossos (The Chappel of Bones), built in 1766, and one of three existing in Portugal. If you love wine tourism, take this opportunity and visit the famous Adega Mayor, designed by the prestigious architect Siza Vieira.<\/p>\n<p><b>Caia Dam<\/b> \u2013 With an extremely beautiful landscape and a great sense of peace and tranquillity, the Caia Dam is the largest dam in all Portalegre region, bordering the municipalities of Elvas, Arronches and Campo Maior. Water sports and leisure activities are allowed, except motorized crafts. The wine \u201cBorba\u201d is one of the most famous in Portugal and it can be rightfully appreciated during the local Wine and Vineyard Festival (Festa da Vinha e do Vinho) in the first fortnight of November, attracting a great number of visitors every year. There\u2019s another option, to plan a wine tasting tour to the Adega Cooperativa de Borba, where you can find a wide range of wines from the best caste of the region. <\/p>\n<p><b>Monforte<\/b> \u2013 The village of Monforte is on the top of a sturdy hill, on the left bank of Ribeira Grande, a hill that is probably the source of the name \u201cMonforte\u201d. The most iconic monument of the village is the castle, which is now in ruin. We also advise a visit to the Lusitanian-Roman Villa of Torre de Palma (Villa Lusitano-Romana de Torre de Palma).
